Catalpa Seed Back Scratcher

Walking home from an errand in late November one year I passed a row of young Catalpa trees. Over the years I have made many gifts for loved ones and these amazing seeds, truly fascinating objects in their own right, were too compelling to pass by. What to make with them? Back scratchers, naturally, haha! I made four.

As the seed would split apart as it dried I chose to drill small holes down the center of the seed pod and wove a pattern of fine cord to hold the pod together and added a layer of alpaca wool for comfort while scratching, a bronze ring for hanging and an amber bead flourish.
