Continue to learn metal smithing fundamentals by choosing a focus. Choose one of the three outlined projects below: stone setting, stamping and stamp making, and construction of a hollow form. You will receive detailed live demos, process and technique notes, and materials for your project.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to watch demos of the other projects, and exchange with fellow students in a friendly, relaxed, and supportive environment.

The Projects:

Stone Setting:

Gems and adornment have been deeply intertwined for thousands of years - here is your opportunity to learn a cabochon setting! This setting will be incorporated into a sterling silver pendant or ring, with design variations, to make it uniquely yours.

You will learn the foundations of stone setting with step-by-step instructions for your project. In addition, the ABC's of designing jewellery that incorporates gemstones, the various tools used and which ones are essential. A brief overview of gem material, what to look for when purchasing a gem, and how to avoid buying stones that are inappropriate for setting.

Stamp Making:

Pattern and texture play vital roles in the aesthetics and appeal of jewelry. In this session you will learn to create your first metal stamp, the principles of hardening and tempering steel, the tools and materials required, and how to create your own unique design. A pair of earrings or pendant will be your creation.

Stamping jewelry has been done for thousands of years, all over the world. You will learn about some of the work and styles created over time and this may influence your own creations.

Hollow Form Construction:

Working with sterling silver sheet, learn to construct a hollow form: pendant or ring. This is my favorite project to introduce the advanced fundamentals of jewelry making. Plus, it is so rewarding to complete! You will learn how to scope out your design and create scale models. Your soldering skills will take a giant leap forward. And going forward you will be in a position to create so many other designs - all building on this foundation.

If you have taken a number of intermediate classes and have an idea for a project not described above - please reach out to me via email: donna@donnahiebert.com and we can arrange to have a chat about your project to determine if I can support your intentions in this class format.

All sessions are taught in Donna’s spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped studio in downtown Hamilton. You will learn by jumping in and beginning a project in the first session!

Course fee includes materials, step-by-step instructions for your project, and on-line access to printable/downloadable information. Please bring a dust mask, pencil, notebook, and a small container to store your projects.
